CLARITY ENHANCED DIAMONDS

Clarity enhanced diamonds are real diamonds that have been dug from the same diamond mines of the world as any other real diamond.

In the 20th century, 1980’s to be more specific, new technology has been developed to allow certain types of diamond inclusions to be treated, concealed and disappear within a diamond, so that in effect they are no longer visible to the unaided eye.

WHAT ARE

CLARITY ENHANCED DIAMONDS?

Clarity enhanced diamonds are diamonds that "had" eye visible imperfections. Usually diamonds that were I1, I2 or I3 in clarity. Evidently, since hardly no one wants a diamond with "eye visible" inclusions, a jeweler will have the inclusion(s) "treated" to be made invisible to the naked eye.

The treatment is similar to having your window scratched deeply, and instead of replacing the entire window, the repairman just "fills the scratch" and make it disappear to the viewer eyes. Clarity enhanced diamonds are also known as "fracture filled" diamonds. Looking at the image of these identical diamonds, is a great example.

The image of the diamond on the left had eye visible imperfection. The right diamond image shows that after the enhancement process, the imperfection became invisible to human vision.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF A DIAMOND HAS BEEN "ENHANCED"?

Before you buy a diamond, the jeweler should ALWAYS disclose that this diamond has been enhanced. In fact, a good and honest jeweler should tell you about the option of a clarity enhanced diamond before you even see one.

As when you are working with a certain budget, and still looking to get a bigger size good looking diamond. It is true that many jewelers out there today are not quick do disclose that information to you at times.

This should not deter you from not buying a clarity enhanced diamond, as they are truly a great option to get a bigger diamond for your money when on a budget! Yet still, to be sold one without knowing it is enhanced, that’s where you should be worried.

IF I HAVE TO TRUST THE JEWELER TO TELL ME WHETHER IT'S ENHANCED OR NOT, HOW DOES HE KNOW WHETHER IT'S BEEN ENHANCED OR NOT??

The best way to detect "fracture filled" or "clarity enhanced" diamonds is under a gemological microscope. The filling generally leaves a faint or strong neon color in the stone, which when observed face up is either invisible or could easily be mistaken for the spectral colors that are observed when looking at a stone face up. When the diamond is observed face down under a scope however the neon colors distinctly stand out. Here is a picture of clarity enhanced diamond under the scope, and what we see is the purple/pink flash is what gives it away.
