The 4 C Diamond Basics

This buyer’s guide is here to answer your questions about the most precious gemstone in the world. The basics of diamonds are the 4 C’s. These are clarity, color, cut, and carat. Learn these basics and you can make the most informed decision when buying a diamond. And you can get the stone that you want at the most attractive price. Buying a diamond is for many people a once in a lifetime experience. It is normal to be nervous about making such an important purchase without having any prior experience. Here is where our expert gemologists will help you. With their patient guidance, you will learn what you need to know about diamonds and make the most informed and successful purchase.

Diamond Shape

Diamond Shape

The shape of your diamond is the first feature that many people notice. The silhouette of the stone can be a round cut, a cushion cut, a princess cut and many other possibilities. Our gemologists can help you learn what you need to know to choose what is right for you.

Diamond Carat

Diamond Carat

Diamonds are measured by weight in carats. The larger a diamond is the rarer and expensive it is.  Besides the shape, it is the size of the diamond that will impress everyone.

Diamond Color

Diamond Color

For white diamonds the less color it has the more valuable it is. Color is graded on a scale of D to Z. D, E and F stones are virtually clear and only a gemologist will be able to tell the difference between grades. These are the most expensive diamonds and as the scale moves down the alphabet the diamonds have more of a yellow to brown color and are less valuable.

The color rule can be reversed with blue, violet, pink or red diamonds. Providing that the stones are very clear, they are more expensive if the color is deeper. If you are interested in these rare stones, talk our gemologists for help.

Diamond Clarity

Diamond Clarity

The clarity of a white diamond is caused by tiny imperfections visible only with magnification. It is the degree of clarity that makes every diamond one of kind.

Diamond Cut

Diamond Cut

Diamonds sparkle because they are cut at angles. The art and craft of choosing and executing the angles and proportions of cut and faceting are what make the difference between a clear white stone and sparkling jewel. The better the job of cutting the diamond, the more it will sparkle.

Diamond Certification

Diamond Certification

The differences between clarity & color grades and other features of a diamond require expert analysis. But the difference between two high grades of diamonds can be a lot of money as well. Diamonds that are certified are guaranteed to be the grade, color, clarity and quality that you are paying for.

After the 4 C’s

There are more about diamonds than just clarity, color, cut, and carat. You can learn more from our expert gemologists about the inner aspects of the diamond. This lets you choose based on symmetry, fluorescence, polish, table, culet, and depth. Learn from our experts and get more diamond for your hard earned dollar.

Diamonds come from within the earth. They are mined in Africa, Russia, Canada, Australia, India, and Brazil. This precious gem is created from crystallized carbon by heat and pressure over millions of years. It is so rare that a miner must move as much as 5 million pounds of rocks to find one carat of diamond.
